Before getting into this post – none of these products were gifted to me by brands or sponsored. These recommendations are 100% genuine, 100% honest. As always
Because of getting married this year, my skin, makeup and just general appearance was way more of a priority than normal. I’ve always loved makeup and buying makeup products, but I wouldn’t have said I was adventurous or obsessed with it.
2016 definitely changed all that. I have loved trying and buying new brands and new products, and my makeup bag is spilling out it’s that full. Throughout the year I’ve discovered some new beauty staples and favourites, so here’s a run down of my recommendations…
Philips Lumea Hair Removal
Let’s start with the most life-changing one.
The Philips Lumea IPL hair remover was actually recommended to me by a friend over lunch one day. I’d thought about buying it before, but it’s quite expensive (depending on what model you get, it could be £350 – £550). So I was always a bit hesitant. What if I bought it and it didn’t work?
Saying that, when someone tells you a product has changed their life (which my friend Rosie did) you tend to contemplate buying it. So I went home and bought it.
It’s mainly for brunette women (I don’t think it works on blonde hair or grey hair – but if you have light hair, hair removal has probably never been a big deal for you anyway). THIS PRODUCT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY.
I got this one from Amazon and it’s reduced right now (so get it!).
It doesn’t get rid of your hair forever (it’s not laser, but rather ‘intense light’). But it gives you 8 weeks of dramatically reduced hair (and then you do the programme again, and have another 8 weeks). If like me, your hair is dark and grows fast, this will change your life. It doesn’t hurt. It doesn’t take hours. It’s easy. IT’S THE BEST BEAUTY PRODUCT I’VE EVER BOUGHT.
Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara
This is the only mascara I use, and one I’ve been using for 2 years now. It doesn’t clump, it doesn’t run, and it really lengthens, and it has proper bristles (not those annoying plastic ones).
Skincare: Bare Minerals, Estee Lauder Double Wear Light and The Estee Edit Pore Minimiser
All of these products I discovered this year. My skin changes so drastically over summer and winter, so I feel like I’m always on this constant mission to find something that works all year round. This combination of products is working for me at the moment! I use the pore minimiser first on my t-zone and cheeks as a primer (less heavy than full on serum or cream primer) which I like. Then I use the Bare Minerals as my first layer of foundation (it gives a lovely dewy base later, but it doesn’t give much coverage, so I top up with the double wear light on any problem areas.
You can buy these for super cheap (Amazon), or go for the official brand and pay much more. I think the general effect is the same, my set is a middle range price point. I’ve found the large Oval Brushes are the best foundation appliers I’ve ever used, and I doubt I’ll use anything else now.
I’ve used my hands in the past, Real Techniques Sponges and ‘regular’ brushes, but none of those things gave me the ease and equal coverage of these brushes. Definitely would recommend these, if you haven’t tried them. They make applying foundation and contouring much quicker and much more professional looking.
Charlotte Tilbury Lipsticks
Definitely my favourite traditional lipsticks. These are normal satin lipsticks from Charlotte Tilbury, not the Matte formulation that has been really on-trend this year. These are just beautifully soft and last really well. My two favourite shades are Very Victoria (on the right) and Secret Salma (on the left).
I use these as my everyday natural ‘nude’ shades. They go with pretty much any make-up look.
Colour-Pop Eye Shadows
OH MY GOD GUYS. These are the best eye shadows I have ever bought ever.
They’re from a US company called ‘Color Pop‘ so delivery time is a little long (but free international delivery if you spend over $50), and you will have to pay a small customs charge – but the products are so cheap, it’s worth it.
The products are actually made by the same company that make Kylie Cosmetics (seriously….) and the formula is almost identical. So you’re basically Kylie Cosmetics for a fraction of the price.
The eyeshadows have the most incredible pigmentation, the swatches below are just one-swipe swatches, and haven’t been layered or doubled over. They go on this dark, and it’s soooo good. The shades are just gorgeous too. Can’t recommend enough!
Matte Lipsticks – MAC and Color Pop
Matte formulations are more long-lasting than normal lipsticks, so a good option for nights out, or all-day wear, etc.
These are my favourite Matte formulation matte lipsticks right now. The MAC ones are pretty new (I think they only came out a few months ago) and they’re super long-lasting. There aren’t many colours right now, but I’m hoping they introduce more in 2017.
The Color Pop ones are the same formulation as Kylie Lip Kits but cost about a 10th of the price. They are so good. I can’t talk about this brand enough – seriously. The best bit? There are sooooo many shades to choose from.
I bought this for my honeymoon and I am just in love with it. It’s a proper brick of highlighter (you definitely get your moneys worth with Illumasqua. I’ve been using it almost daily for 6 months and I’ve barely even dented it.
It’s super soft and beautiful and not cakey or ‘too’ glittery. Perfect!
