Travel is always fun, pretty much regardless of where you go and how you get there. But, there is something extra special about going abroad to attend the wedding of a friend or family member.
The wedding party is smaller
Most couples who marry abroad only invite a few guests, and (in my opinion) parties are always so much more fun when you know everyone there and can fully relax and enjoy yourself. It’s always a huge honour to be invited when the guest list in small, and it makes the whole experience really special.
Weddings abroad tend to be less formal
Not to mention the fact that foreign weddings give you a chance to dress up in a way you might not feel comfortable doing for a wedding that is held in your home country. For example, in the UK most men would feel obliged to wear a three piece suit, paired with a shirt and a tie, and you would have to don a dress and high heels. For a beach wedding, you might want to experience with floaty fabrics, foot jewellery or even more local clothing.
For women a lightweight summer dress or playsuit, worn with sandals is usually perfectly acceptable, and would look totally adorable. For the wedding a went to in the Dominican Republic a few year ago, I wore a pretty summer dress and bare feet. It was lovely and I felt comfortable all day long. In some cases, the male guests can get away with wearing a short sleeved shirt with shorts. This makes shopping for a wedding guest outfit much easier, and affordable.
You can find out more about choosing a suitable outfit for a wedding abroad, from this page. It is written primarily with the bride in mind, but most of the advice given applies equally to wedding guests, so it will be useful for you.
The chance to experience something new
One of the things I enjoy the most about travel is the fact that there is always something new to experience. There is something extra special about a wedding ceremony that is held abroad. Usually, local marriage customs are woven into the day, which can make for some great photos, and you’ll get the chance to try new food and drink too.
Everyone is really relaxed
Most foreign weddings have a much more relaxed atmosphere, because usually they are slotted in between an actually holiday and time off. You’ve probably already been staying nearby for a few days chilling by the pool, or relaxing in the sunshine, and the wedding is just a nice change of pace.
