I LOVE chicken. Wings, thighs, burgers…. *drooling*
When we discovered BIRD, a small chain in London specialising in friend chicken, I was pretty damn sure it was going to make it into my top-5 restaurants list. I was right.
Before I go into a review and start telling you about all the amazing food, let me just impart this piece of advice. If you are going, PLEASE order the Fried Chicken Waffle Burger. It is INCREDIBLE and the best chicken burger you will ever eat. There is other delicious stuff too of course, but personally, the Waffle Burger is a must-order if you’re visiting BIRD.
The restaurant doesn’t take bookings, and they tend to start filling up from around 6.30pm onwards. I would recommend heading there about 6pm if you want to be sure of a table.
They also do cocktails and drinks, so you could always have a round of drinks before ordering, just to make sure you get a table bagged!
Now onto the food.
For starters I would recommend trying any of the chicken wings. My favourite glaze is the Buffalo sauce (but I love Buffalo more than life itself, so I’m totally biased). The other sauces are delicious too, and might be better for you if spice isn’t quite your thing.
For the main course, as I already mentioned, I would always order the waffle burger. It is delicious, messy and juicy – everything you want in a burger. It is also MASSIVE. The waffle isn’t sweet (so don’t worry) it’s actually quite savoury and matches perfectly with the BBQ sauce and melted cheese they use.
We also tried the Parm Burger on this particular visit, which was delicious too. It has this yummy herb mayo and sweet brioche bun, which is heavenly.
If you’re thinking “oh my god, look at those chips” that would be an accurate observation of these particular chips. They’re drizzled in mayo and this sweet / sticky asian inspired sauce. Totally amazing and if you have space after your chicken wings and burger – then this is what you’ll want to be eating!
I took this mainly to give you an idea of the portion size… This is only half of the Waffle Burger. As you can see, it’s about the size of my head.
For dessert (again if you have any room left!) they do the most amazing donuts. The flavours change every day (they’re baked fresh) and you can get them on their own, or with ice-cream and cream (like a sundae kind of style). They taste a bit like Krispy Kremes, but fresher.
So the overall verdict?
JUST GO, IT’S AMAZING.
It’s the best chicken in London, and it has the american / diner style that is casual and cheap and affordable. It doesn’t break the bank, but it’s delicious and friendly.
10 / 10.
