Hard to believe it’s here, isn’t it? The new year, I mean. 2018 was such a crazy year for all of us that it seemed like it might never end! But end it has, and now we stand ready to tackle the challenges and enjoy the wonderful opportunities that 2019 has ready for us!
If you’re like me, you’re already in the full swing of your new year’s resolutions. You may be hitting the gym regularly (you know – the one you used to go to last year), or maybe you’re cutting back on drinking so much. Maybe you’re gearing up for your wedding day, and doing your best to prepare for the big day!
Maybe you’ve even decided that you’d just like to spruce up your home, just a little bit. It’s definitely on my to-do list! I wouldn’t consider myself a trends follower. I tend to find something I love, and stick with it for a long time. But I’ll admit, I was sick of looking at the same four walls every day. I decided that I wanted to change up my home design for the new year!
If you’re ready to change up your design too (and since you’re reading this post, I’m guessing you are), then I’m glad to see I’m not alone! I hope your journey to a better, brighter home is every bit as much fun as mine has been!
To make for smoother sailing for your home redesign project, I’ve put together a few tips and tricks I’ve picked up while I changed up my surroundings. I’ve tried to keep it fairly general so that everybody can benefit, but there’s some stuff that worked so well for me that I’ve just got to share it!
Change Out Your Bedding
Okay, I’ll start with a tip so simple that you’ll have no trouble at all putting it to work for yourself immediately! In the last few months of 2018, I was really having trouble sleeping. I thought it was probably stress from work, or how cold it had gotten outside. Turns out, it was neither. What was really bothering me was my bedding.
Like I said – I’m a creature of specific tastes. I find something that works and stick with it for years. When I first chose my bedding, I loved it with all my heart. It was this nice blend of purples and blacks that were just totally me. Once I took the time to really look at it, though, I realized my bedding was the source of my woes.
For one thing, it wasn’t comfortable anymore. I’d washed it so many times that it had worn out, and was getting really flimsy. It also didn’t insulate heat as well as it used to, and I’d wake up shivering from the cold. Finally, I realized I just didn’t like the way it looked anymore. The design and colors were perfect for 18-year-old me, but just didn’t appeal to 23-year-old me, and that really bothered me.
Once I’d gotten rid of my old set, and swapped to a new one, I felt (and slept) much better! Unlike the last time I chose my bedding, I really paid attention to the thread count and the material. I found a set in the 400 range made from soft cotton, and it feels absolutely amazing!
If you’re ready to give your home a nice lift and enjoy better sleep to boot, then I suggest you start with your bedding!
Add Some Splashes of Color
When it comes to giving your home a fresh look, nothing beats color. Just like with my bedding, I’d gotten tired of looking at just the same shades of purples, blues, blacks, and whites that make up my living room. I don’t have a whole lot of free time, though, so I wasn’t quite ready to completely repaint the house. To solve my dilemma, I found other ways to introduce some much-needed variety to my color scheme!
I started with the throws I have on the back of my couch. They were a deep black against my purple sofa, so they didn’t really stand out much. Comfy? Yes. Attractive? No. I swapped them out for some nice crimson-colored throws that stand out more, and look much better!
Besides the throws, I also added some new pillows to my sofa. I’d left it pretty well unadorned besides the throws, and it had become really boring to look at. As soon as I laid down my new pillows, it instantly looked better! They’re incredibly comfortable too, so my naps have gotten even better!
If you’re looking to add a bit more variety to your house, without painting everything over, do what I did! Get yourself some new pillows, a few throws, and some wonderful pillows and start transforming your room today!
Add a More Personal Touch
As I’ve matured, my tastes have definitely changed. I mentioned that the purple patterns in my bedding didn’t appeal to me anymore, nor did the palette I’d used in my living room. The same also went for my taste in decor. This was really true of the wall art and picture frames on my walls.
When I bought them, they really suited me. Now, they don’t really speak to who I am as a person anymore. I needed a fresh start but didn’t want to just use the same old things you find in most furniture and home goods stores.
I’ve always loved to draw and paint. That’s one thing that won’t ever change, no matter how old I get. So, while it was spur of the moment, I decided to hang up this still-life I’d done of my mother’s flower garden. While I didn’t think it was the best it could be, I absolutely loved the way it made the house feel more like it was a part of me! Plus, my girlfriends told me they absolutely love how it looks!
If you’re struggling for ways to introduce more personality into your home, considering using some decorations you’ve made yourself. It’s a ton more fun than spending hours picking items in a shop, and it gives a 100% original touch to your home that you can’t get anywhere else!
